Barellstalks are a great asset when they are young, but when this fungus matures, it produces poisonous spores that make it unusable. When young, the barrelstalk gets its name from it’s barrel-shaped body. It has a hard, woody surface, but the inside of the stalk is an edible pulp that surrounds a store of water. Barrelstalks are often tapped for the valuable water they contain.
